Notes from Google Enterprise talk at WAVC last month

Jotted down some quick notes from David Girard's presentation to WAVC. Lots to think about. Apologies for the lack of complete sentences.  Need to formulate thoughts on cloud more coherently.

Couple hundred revs
Command line interface to the world
10k + search appliance customers, #1 in mkt share
1m+ businesses using goog apps, 30k per day
Consumer face, enterprise backend
Cloud: app vs platform
Not abt office vs docs. Big cost savings is in the messaging.
Cloud advantage: speed(checks and balances with user feedback offsetting handing over rights to upgrades), consumer driven innovation, scale, 7m images to goog images/day, 13hrs of video to goog every minute/ cost per user declines, now marginal gmail acct is profitable(consumer), capability harnessing data/compute power

Claims gmail up more than groupwise, lotus, exchange

Integation issues - bugaboo of trad. Enterprise software, thinks relative to the old world, data portability will improve.

Federation of clouds, moving quickly back and forth

4th largest server manufacturer in the world, billions of $ thru system, cc#s, personal data on 10s of millions, data distributed across servers

App accelerators: chrome, android, app engine(analogous to amzn, os level access) but goog wants higher level development environment
Initially python only, adding java
(Serving architecture,distributed
Data storage, runtime environment, open source sdk, web based admin console). Increasingly geared to business mkt, goal to increasingly open up more of goog stack(eg map reduce, translation etc)

Geolocation: more consumer than enterprise apps?

Compliance for apps: ediscovery, initially thought ugly, didn't want to do but now realize its necessary if you want to be the front end. Implications for ctct? Will never be a bi or erp company

Gdrive in the works

Doing work around voice and video

Ideally, next great smb proj mgmt/erp app will be built on app engine. One click provisioning to app customers
